Giving up Your Beagle

People have to give up their Beagles for many reasons and it is usually a very difficult decision to make.

If you need advice about handling your Beagle please contact your hound’s breeder in the first place or one of our Area Welfare Officers if this is not possible.

Sometimes a change in your approach to handling your hound can make a difference and enable you to keep him/her.

If you have decided that you need to rehome your Beagle, first of all please contact your local Beagle Welfare Officer. They will want to know all about your hound including the reasons you are having to give him/her up, if they are used to other pets, children, being left at all, and any particular problems or good points.

We can arrange to take your hound into one of our approved kennels, but ideally we hope that he/she can be moved to a new home with the least disruption.

If your hound needs to be taken in quickly we will try to help as quickly as we can.

Our Area Officers are all volunteers and fit in their work with Beagle Welfare around home and work, so do be prepared to fit in with them as much as possible. It is most helpful if you can arrange transport for your hound when they are moved.

When we take in a hound in we expect owners to sign the ownership over to Beagle Advice and Welfare and give in any Kennel Club registrations documents and vaccination records. If at all possible make sure that vaccinations are up to date.

We also expect that you will be able to give a donation to Beagle Advice and Welfare when you give up your hound. This helps to keep the scheme running and goes towards the costs of rehoming your Beagle.

If your hound has bitten for what ever reason, or has a temperament problem you must let us know. We reserve the right to refuse Beagles with serious temperament problems as it is unlikely that a home could be found that will take such hounds in.

Sometimes, when a hound has developed behaviour problems it may be necessary to place him/her in kennels or an experienced foster home for assessment.

We aim to find the best possible permanent home for all our Beagles as soon as possible. Many of our homes have owned Beagles for many years and are experienced Beagle owners.
